What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. The purpose of treatment is to generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and may treat various scars, wrinkles, and large pores. Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause a slight injury to the skin and that the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. It’s normal for the skin to lose collagen due to age or injury.

During the procedure, your injector uses a microneeding device that makes small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool. The pinpricks are so small that you likely won’t notice them after the procedure. Your injector will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too. Before getting started, your injector will use a topical anesthetic to reduce the chances of pain. This process takes 30 minutes to insure you are numb before your treatment. The Injector Room uses The Skin Pen for microneedling.

Post-treatment your injector will then apply a serum or calming treatment. In total, you can expect to be at the office for well over an hour.

Results typically begin to show 3-4 weeks after treatment and continue to improve over time. Results will usually last between 9-18 months. For best results, 3-4 treatments are generally recommended, spaced about 4-6 weeks. apart

Clients typically report smoother skin texture, improved skin tone, decreased wrinkles, decreased fine lines, and a firmer appearance.

Microneedling will vary depending on the issue:

Preventative- 3 treatments every 4-6 weeks

Aging, laxity- 3-5 treatments every 4-6 weeks

Acne scarring- 4-6 treatments every 4-6 weeks

Results may last 12-16 months.

Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling isn’t without risk. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days. Call your injector if you notice more severe side effects, such as:

  • bleeding

  • bruising

  • infection

  • have open wounds

  • have had radiation therapy recently

  • have a history of skin scars (keloid)

Proactive maintenance

Microneedling needs to be repeated and maintained. Factual length of results can vary from person to person due to differences in facial anatomy, gender, and lifestyle. Proactive maintenance is key to providing continued results.
